What is Vitamin B12 Cyanocobalamin/ Hydroxycobalamine/Methylcobalamin/Adenosylcobalamine?

Vitamin B12 ( (cyanocobalamin and its derivatives) ) is a water-soluble vitamin, and the largest and most structurally complex vitamin. The vitamin exists in four near-identical chemical forms vitamers: cyanocobalamin, hydroxocobalamin, adenosylcobalamin and methylcobalamin. Cyanocobalamin and hydroxocobalamin are used to prevent or treat vitamin deficiency; once absorbed they are converted into adenosylcobalamin and methylcobalamin, which are the forms which have physiological activity. All forms of vitamin B12 contain the biochemically rare element cobalt (chemical symbol Co) positioned in the center of a corrin ring. The only organisms to produce vitamin B12 are certain bacteria, and archaea. Bacteria are found on plants that herbivores eat; they are taken into the animals’ digestive system, proliferate and form part of their permanent gut flora, producing vitamin B12 internally. Vitamin B12 occurs naturally only in animal-derived foods, such as meat, fish, eggs, cheese and milk.

Vitamin B12 plays an important general role in growth and well-being, as well as for heart, brain and cognitive function at all life stages. Some lifestyle groups, such as vegans and vegetarians, are at risk of vitamin B12 deficiency due to a lack of vitamin B12 in their diets. Elderly people (10-30%) often have vitamin B12 malabsorption, as do people with certain diseases.

What is the benifit of Vitamin B12 Cyanocobalamin/ Hydroxycobalamine/Methylcobalamin/Adenosylcobalamine?

Metabolism: Vitamin B12 is essential for the metabolism of fats and carbohydrates and the synthesis of proteins. It assists in the transporting and storage of folate in cells and the activation of folate to its active form. Cells that divide rapidly, like epithelial cells and bone marrow, have a greater need for Vitamin B12 compared to other cells.

Brain and nervous system: Vitamin B12 is involved in the manufacturing of myelin sheath, a fatty layer that insulates nerves. It is also an essential component in the formation of neurotransmitters. Vitamin B12 supplements can be taken in those suffering from psychosis and depression and has been given to those suffering from Alzheimer’s and seen positive results.

Blood cells and Genetic Material: Blood requires vitamin B12 in order to function and be manufactured properly. Vitamin B12 is also necessary for the production of nucleic acids, which make up our DNA. Taking vitamin B12 supplements or having the proper blood levels can help treat anemia and reduce plasma homocysteine levels.
